Pamplemousses Botanical Garden
One of the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere: giant water lilies, rare palms and centuries of tropical plants.
The Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden at Pamplemousses is among the oldest botanical gardens in the southern hemisphere, first laid out by a French governor in the 18th century. It's a shady, peaceful place to walk among an extraordinary collection of tropical plants.
Its most famous residents are the giant Amazon water lilies, huge round pads that float on a pond like green trays. There are also dozens of palm species including the rare Talipot, which flowers just once after decades and then dies, a spice garden, and a large tortoise enclosure. A guide, which Krishna can arrange, really brings the plants and their stories to life.
It sits right next to the sugar museum at Beau Plan, so the two are very often combined.
