The Citadel (Fort Adelaide)

A 19th-century British hilltop fort with the best panoramic view over Port Louis and its harbour.

Fort Adelaide, known locally as La Citadelle, was built by the British in the 1830s on a hill above Port Louis. Its stone ramparts have survived intact, and today the main reason to climb up is the view: a full panorama across the capital's rooftops, the mountains behind, and the harbour and sea in front.

It's a quick, rewarding stop and a favourite for photos, especially in good light, and the fort is sometimes used for events and markets.

Being right above the city, it slots easily into any Port Louis visit alongside the market and Caudan.
