Le Morne Brabant Hike
Climb the UNESCO-listed mountain at the island's south-west tip for staggering views over the lagoon and reef.
Le Morne Brabant is the dramatic basalt mountain that rises at the far south-west corner of Mauritius, its peninsula ringed by one of the most beautiful lagoons on the island. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site, not only for its beauty but for its history: the mountain was a refuge for escaped slaves, and that story gives it deep meaning for Mauritians.
The guided hike climbs through forest to a viewpoint and, for the fit and sure-footed, on toward the summit, where the reward is an unforgettable panorama: the turquoise lagoon, the reef, and the famous 'underwater waterfall' illusion, a trick of sand and currents best seen from the air but hinted at from up here.
A local guide is required for the upper section. It's a proper climb, so decent shoes and water are essential, and Krishna will arrange the guide and an early start to beat the heat.
