Cap Malheureux: Red Roof Church

The island's most photographed little church: a bright red roof against a turquoise sea at the northern tip.

Notre-Dame Auxiliatrice, the small church at Cap Malheureux, is one of the most photographed spots in Mauritius, and it's easy to see why. Its vivid red roof stands against the blue of the lagoon, with the northern islands, Coin de Mire, Île Plate and others, floating on the horizon behind it.

It's a quick, free and lovely stop right at the northern tip of the island. On a clear day the colours are postcard-perfect, and it's a favourite backdrop for photos.

It usually caps off a northern tour, on the way back from Grand Baie or the botanical garden.
