A brilliant museum inside a former sugar factory: the story of sugar, rum and the island itself, ending in tastings.
Set in the old Beau Plan sugar factory near Pamplemousses, L'Aventure du Sucre is far more engaging than 'a sugar museum' sounds. Walking through the preserved milling machinery, it tells the whole story of how sugar shaped Mauritius, its economy and its people, the history of slavery and indenture, and the rise of rum.
It's well laid out and genuinely interesting for adults and older children, and it finishes on the best note possible: tastings of unrefined special sugars and a chance to sample local rums. The shop is a good place for sugar, rum, jams and gifts to take home.
It's right next to Pamplemousses garden, so the two make a natural pair on a northern day, and it's a good choice if the weather turns.
