Rhumerie de Chamarel

A scenic hillside distillery making agricultural rum from fresh cane juice, with a tour, a tasting and a cocktail.

Tucked into the green Chamarel valley and easy to spot by its red roofs and stone chimneys, this is the highest-altitude rum distillery in Mauritius. Unlike many rums, Chamarel makes rhum agricole, distilled straight from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice rather than molasses, which gives it a grassy, aromatic character.

The guided tour walks you through the whole process, from cane to bottle, and finishes with a tasting of the estate's rums plus a complimentary cocktail such as a mojito or ti-punch. There's also a well-regarded restaurant on site if you'd like to stay for lunch.

It's a short hop from the Seven Coloured Earth, so the two are almost always visited together.
