The Black River Gorges is the wild green heart of Mauritius, the island's largest national park, protecting its last stretches of native forest, rare endemic birds and deep river valleys. You don't have to hike to enjoy it: the main viewpoint sits right by the mountain road.
From the lookout the land falls away into a vast amphitheatre of forested gorges, with waterfalls threading down the far slopes on a clear day. It's one of the finest panoramas on the island and takes only a few minutes to reach from the car.
